The History Of Webster, Massachussettes
The town of Webster, Massachusetts is full of rich history and fascinating stories that date back to the early 1700s. Webster, Massachusetts, was the ancestral home of the Nipmuc people for thousands of years. It was first colonized by Europeans in 1713 and officially incorporated on March 6, 1832. The town was formed from portions of Dudley, Oxford, and an unincorporated gore.
The primary founder, Samuel Slater, a renowned manufacturer, played a major role in Webster being founded. After achieving success in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Slater established textile mills in Webster. In 1936, one of his mills was acquired by the Cranston Print Works. The town was named after his friend, Daniel Webster. Slater spent his final years in Webster and was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery.
With its unique location on the shores of Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, the lake with the longest name in the world, other wise known as Webster Lake, Webster became a hub for trade and industry in the nineteenth century.
