The town of Mansfield, Connecticut, nestled in the northeastern region of the state, in Tolland County, is known for its scenic beauty, rural charm, and excellent schooling system. Mansfield, Connecticut, was first settled in 1664 by a group of pioneers led by Robert Warren, who purchased a large tract of land from the Nipmuc people. Mansfield, Connecticut, settled in 1686 and originally known as Ponde-Town, or Ponde Place was renamed after Major Moses Mansfield.
Major Mansfield, an early settler and mayor of Mansfield, played a significant role in the town’s incorporation in 1702. The Indian name for the town was “Noubesetuck.” Major Mansfield distinguished himself in King Phillip’s War as a Major, the highest military rank at the time. He led the successful defeat of the Indians near the town that now bears his name. Apart from his military achievements, Major Mansfield served as a member of the General Court of Assembly, Judge of the Probate, and the County Court.
In 1723, a gristmill was built on the Fenton River, which flourished in the following years. The mill’s success led to the growth of the town as the mill owners employed workers, and more people chose to settle in Mansfield to be near it. By 1740, the town had a church, a school, and a village green.
The role Mansfield played in the American Revolution was crucial, as the town residents were actively involved in many events that led to the independence of America. In 1774, a town meeting took place in Mansfield, where the residents openly showed their support for the Patriots’ cause.
